Food for Thought: Not all heroes wear capes
From Canadian Thanksgiving through to the end of the year, Red Cap Hot Sauce Co will be donating a meal to a person in need for each bottle sold of our locally famous Peppa Sauce, through a partnership with Second Harvest.
I remember a time during the holidays when I was a child. I came downstairs to help my mom bring groceries up to our apartment. I turned to her and said "well, we don't have much, but at least we have food." And that was all we needed for the holidays - good food and family. We want to help ensure others have the same.
Why Second Harvest?
Picture this: a bunch of food superheroes swooping in to save the day, rescuing perfectly good food that would otherwise go to waste. They work with grocery stores, restaurants, and food producers to collect surplus food and distribute it to local agencies. It's like a food rescue mission, and they're the heroes we need.
Second Harvest values community and the environment the same way we do. We are active in our community, planning events that bring people together and assisting with others such as Orchard Community Picnic and Appleby Line Street Festival. We strive to use local ingredients in our sauce whenever possible, reduce waste in our own production processes and encourage recycling of our glass bottles.
With our Trinidadian heritage, the values of respect for the environment and food are embedded. We often joke that we can't waste anything, and that is how the steel pan was invented (making a beautiful re-use of oil drums). Our mother knows how to make soup out of any scraps in the kitchen, and as kids we always had to clean our plate! This partnership with Second Harvest is an awesome opportunity for us to give back to the community.
How Can You Help?
